A Career with the Utah State Auditor's Office
The Utah State Auditor's Office staff are recognized as experts in governmental auditing and accounting. As part of this office, you will be in a position to make a difference in Utah government. You will make recommendations to improve operations and safeguard the assets of the State. You will also interact with various levels of staff, management, and officers of State Government and the State's colleges and universities. Your experience will encompass auditing a wide variety of activities. Our clients not only include the State's governmental operations, but also include insurance, retailing, construction, investing, and lending activities as well as all State colleges and universities. These clients range from small local offices to multimillion-dollar statewide agencies.
Applying for Employment at the State Auditor's Office
The State Auditor's Office hires college graduates who are eligible to sit for the CPA exam or who have their CPA license as permanent full-time members of our professional staff. In addition, we periodically hire interns on an as-needed basis.
Recruiting Process
Our annual recruiting process for permanent full-time staff starts in September when we visit selected Utah college and university campuses. These campus visits are made to generate interest among qualified students; however, campus interviews are not required. Positions are advertised at selected Utah college and university campuses.

Job Description - Entry Level
A Staff Auditor:
- Performs professional entry level auditing duties for financial, compliance, and special audits of state departments, agencies, and institutions of higher education.
- Audits financial statements for proper reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Audits financial operations for compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and with state policies and procedures.
- Reviews and evaluates internal controls related to financial reporting, financial operations, and compliance.
Preference is given to candidates with either 1) a CPA license, 2) a Master's Degree in Accounting, or 3) a Master's Degree in Business Administration or Finance with an undergraduate degree in Accounting.

Training
As you start working, you will be provided with several days of training covering topics that will allow you to perform your responsibilities. Throughout your career, you will receive regular training in a variety of areas that will help you become more proficient. You will also receive regular training on current developments in the profession. As a minimum, you will have the opportunity to participate in enough training classes and seminars to meet continuing professional education requirements.
You will be assigned to work in audit teams. The in-charge for the audit team will provide you with regular on-the-job training. This training will be specific for your assignment and level of experience. As you gain more experience, you will participate in on-the-job training of other staff.
Professional Activities
Membership in professional organizations (i.e., the AICPA, UACPA, ISACA, ACFE, etc.) is strongly encouraged as a mechanism to keep professionally up-to-date and to enhance the professional status of the Office. Several of our staff participate as members of committees and officers of various professional organizations. This opportunity is also available for you.
